10 Secrets To A Perfect Lawn
This article is very helpful especially during the summer months when your lawn is strained the most. These 10 tips will keep your lawn green and growing while your neighbors is just holding on.
Tip #1: Mow frequently with sharp blades
- By mowing often and with sharp blades your lawn thickens up and keeps out weeds.
Tip#2: Don't go too short
- The rule of thumb is never to cut more than 1/3 of the grasses height in one cutting.
By cutting less length; your need for water decreases and the likelihood of the grass
resisting diseases increases.
Tip #3: Don't mow a wet lawn
- Mowing when the lawn is wet causes the soil to compact which in turn doesn't allow
the roots to breath.
Tip #4: Mulch clippings into the lawn
- By bagging your clippings you take natural fertilizer off the lawn. If the clippings are
short enough they will eventually work there way back into the soil.
Tip #5: Water deeply -- and infrequently
- Watering your lawn an inch at a time is suggested. A good way to track how much you
are watering is by putting an empty tuna can in the area that you are watering and
once the can is full, an inch has roughly been distributed.
Tip #6: Avoid nighttime watering
- By watering at night the chance of diseases increases. The best time to water is
pre-dawn or early morning. This will allow the sun to evaporate the excess water.
Tip #7: Don't over fertilize it
- By over-fertilizing your lawn you promote fast growth that is unsustainable. This
causes the excess fertilizer to runoff into our water supplies which often causes
contamination.
Tip #8: Don't mix your fertilizers
- Mixing fertilizers often gives mixed results that won't be consistent
Tip #9: Grow thick grass -- and stay on top of your weeds
- The best defense against pests, weeds, and diseases is to grow thick grass.
Tip #10 Choose the right herbicide
- There are two types of herbicides.
1) Pre-emergent - these prevent weeds from germinating and are often
applied once a year
2) Post-emergent - these are used to control broadleaf weeds
