Liluma
I like to go to great restaurants in St. Louis and all over the world. Over the past few years, I have dined in some of the best restaurants in San Francisco, Chicago, New York, Paris, London, Florence, and Rome.
As a born and bred St. Louis native, I am continually impressed by the quality of our local restaurants. One of my favorites is Liluma, located at 236 N. Euclid in St. Louis’ Central West End. Liluma can be reached for reservations at 314-361-7771. Recently, Brad Watts, from Liluma’s sister restaurant, The Crossing, moved from The Crossing over to Liluma.
I sense that since Brad moved to the new location, Liluma has begun to experience a rebirth. This is not to say that the restaurant has ever disappointed me – and I am hard to please. But recently the level of attention to detail has increased.
On a recent evening, my wife and I hosted a party of four at Liluma. Our waiter, Tom, was exceptional as usual. He is one of those waiters who is not only attentive, but also has good opinions and is willing to share them – this is a quality that I appreciate when dining.
We chose the recently added Chef’s menu. Unlike lesser restaurants and their “no substitutions, please” policies, Liluma graciously allows the diner to choose from almost anything on the a la carte menu to sub into the Chef’s four course menu.
I chose a perfectly dressed salad with caramelized nuts and pears. I continued my meal by trying a small portion of fresh pasta with English peas – the pasta was perfect, the peas were fresh. Then, I enjoyed a medium rare steak perfectly cooked. At the table, we all remarked about the chef’s ability to cook each of our orders without flaw. Dessert followed the main course – chocolate torte.
The accompanying wines were recommended by our waiter and they were excellent. We all had a great time.
I enjoy Liluma not only because of outstanding food served by attentive staff, but also because it is locally owned and operated. Jim Fiala, the owner of both Liluma and The Crossing, in Clayton, works hard and gets to know the patrons of his fine restaurants. On any given night at The Crossing in Clayton, you will see Jimmy, strolling the restaurant, sitting with customers and chatting about food.
