Choosing and Planting Trees
A big part of a beautifully landscaped yard is the trees that are included. Before planting trees a homeowner needs to do their homework and figure out the best tree for the situation. Trees are a type of plant that uses alot of attention the start with but once established bring many years of joy. Here are a few tips to consider before purchasing and planting that favorite tree.
Selecting the right tree
1. Choose trees from two different general categories
A. Deciduous trees include large shade trees that provide shade in the summer and allow sunlight to pass through in the winter to warm your home. These include many different varieties that produce all types of foliage for homeowners to choose from.
B. Evergreen or coniferous type trees produce dense vegetation that are ideal for privacy or windbreaks for homeowners. These can be planted together for a backdrop for flowering trees or shrubs or by themselves.
Buying a Tree
1. Bare-root trees come inexpensively in the the mail and need to be planted immediately and not allowed to dry out.
2. Container-grown trees come from nurseries and can be planted immediately and often will establish quickly
3. Balled-and-burlapped trees are good when buying a 10 to 15 foot tall tree. It is recommended that a homeowner hires the grower to plant this type tree.
Choosing the Right Site
It is smart to place strong-wooded shade trees at least 50 feet apart and 15 feet away from buildings and utility lines. If you are planting a soft-wooded shade tree it is smart to add an additional 10 feet away from buildings and each other. This will allow for future growth and also allow the buildings to stay safe in stormy situations.
Maintaining a New Tree
- only apply fertilizer when necessary in the second growing season
- Mulch trees to conserve moisture and reduce weeds
- Wrap tree trunks to help prevent winter damage from weather and varmints
- Stake young trees, especially bare-root trees and evergreens, to give strength against high wind
